The frame doesn’t particularly flatter their face. Or it doesn’t uniquely represent or refer to anything special about them. Or they notice no one compliments them on their specs. Why is glasses shopping such a universal challenge?

If it’s important, it needs your focused attention

People don’t always realize that finding that beloved frame requires significant, caring attention. But think about it: you’re going to wear that pair for a while, at least a year, yes? How many total hours, do you think? And if you have any online life, it’s about the only choice you can make that shows folks who you are. Showing, rather than telling, gets the message across instantly, whether on screen or in person.

Frames need to fit in several, equally vital dimensions

So, you want to apply some careful thought. An expert eyewear stylist can help guide your process. Because you want to choose frames that complement your bone structure, your coloring, your unique facial composition. And you want those frames to feel physically comfortable sitting on your head. No hot spots. No digging. No annoying slippage.

Choose frames that celebrate your unique fabulousness

And you want your specs to communicate your values, your spirit, your je ne sais quoi. An image that celebrates the real you. That says you’re passionate and serious about your particular profession. Or that you’re down for a funky, entertaining outing. Or that you can be trusted with confidential information. Or …. There are more purposes your frame can fulfill than there are people who wear glasses. Choosing without earnest intention leaves you vulnerable to misinterpretation, before you even open your mouth. Better to deliberately direct the message you’ll deliver, and make your glasses work for you.

I love helping the intentional dreamers, creators, and self-loving misfits of this world to discover their distinctive messages, and then to put them on their faces. These folks thrive on finding justice, dignity, good health, and peace for folks. They craft solutions to the struggles of single individuals and of entire peoples. To succeed, these change-makers need to influence other leaders, authorities, and institutions. They know that in collaboration, they can bring the change the world so needs, now and for those who’ll come after.

Helping client Jamie Sarche communicate life’s work—from sensitive to fierce

In some cases, that change links life and death. For us humans and for our environment. For example, my client, Jamie Sarche, eases the tough inevitability of death, by educating about ways to relieve loved ones of some avoidable grief. Jamie helps clients complete their burial plans long before they die. She presents of a range of options, including modern ones designed to help save the planet. (Water cremation, anyone?) She helps clients think through the best fit for them and their families. All to prevent the tedium of such decisions just when survivors are in no condition to make them. So that instead, they can do what they must in that raw aftermath—grieve, remember, and connect with those who will best support them.

And that’s just Jamie’s professional life. In her spare time, she champions social justice causes with the ferocity of a thousand lions. She’s registered thousands (of people) to vote. She’s helped lead organizations that fight for civil rights and that feed, house, and otherwise support our community’s least privileged. She’s focused, fierce, and compassionate.

Solution: depict your character, in comfort

So, when considering her specs, Jamie and I pondered her need to approach her clients and public with appropriate sensitivity. She also wanted to demonstrate that she values the joy and richness that life gives, while it lasts. How? She chose two pairs of glasses (everyone needs a backup pair).

The first presents a subdued, unassuming image—it’s tortoise, with a pretty, soft green, lacy patterned accent. The color combo plays well with her dark brown hair and plays up her pretty green eyes. And the rounded shape welcomes with an easy accessibility. The frame gives Jamie just the delicate connection she wants to convey.

Her second pair connects superbly as well, but in a different way. Jamie chose an equally flattering style and color scheme, a wayfarer with turquoise temples and stripes on a white background. This pair beams bold, bright, and breezy. And she reports that wearing them makes her feel happy. Which she’s discovered lightens the mood of a gathering, without compromising any appropriate solemnity. Because Jamie fully embodies the message this frame proclaims: to life!

What do you want to communicate?

With whom do you want to play and work? And that many, many others I hadn’t yet met would benefit from a new, focused offering too. As I am unique, so are you, and so is everyone else. Thankfully. As I need to wear glasses that fit me and express who I am, so do many others. And as I transform from an old to a new version of me, so do they (or so would they someday). After six years of trial and error and tons of, let’s call it research, along the way, I’m proudly debuting the On Your Face Glasses website. Its purpose: to bring you beautiful frames and clear, accurate lenses that fit not just your face, but your whole unique you-ness. I’ve combined the elements I’ve discovered my friends, their friends and theirs, and my local Denver clients, desire in an eyeglasses shopping experience: connection (yes, electronically), convenience, FUN. An honest exchange resulting in your best look and most authentic experience of you.

I know, if I’m selling, how can I be honest? (Like the old lawyer joke: How do you know when a lawyer is lying? His lips are moving, ha ha.) Well, how can I not be honest, if I want you to recommend the site to your trusting loved ones and return for your own next pair? Give the site a try, and please let me know how you like it.

A new birthday

Yep, six years ago, I left my high-tech corporate career; September 23 is my new birthday. That time has passed in dog years – it’s been a happy, energetic renewal. It’s been fraught with distractions (“Squirrel!”) as my fears and insecurities chased easier opportunities. ‘Cause really, can I create my own business that grows quickly enough to keep my family’s roof over our heads and shoes on our feet? Time compresses when the funding is finite. And anyway, how long should it take to build a website that looks inviting and works well?

We have the technology, right? Well, we do now! But the jalopy has sputtered along, calling on experts who could, then couldn’t design and build the store. Then visiting with others who could, then couldn’t. Then more of that nonsense.

A little of what I’ve learned

A six-year ramp-up has delivered a boatload of lessons about me. A tiny sampling: I’m too patient for my own good. And impatient. Perfectionist (that one wasn’t a surprise). So naturally, the results have spurred adjustments along the way. I’ve learned to balance more bossy with wholly respectful, when I’ve needed to move a project ALONG ALREADY. And I’ve become way pickier about with whom I associate.

Quality associations

You can tell how picky by the looks and feels of this website. Lacey Ankenman of Lacey Ankenman Design brings can-do to the delicate balance between perky and professional, using color and typeface combos, and a cohesive style that arranges visual elements in relation to one another in magical not-patterns. Into that mix, she infuses straight-ahead, this-then-that-then-these-then-those flow, to produce a design that guides you the customer enjoyably through the process of finding your best specs.

Raemi Vermiglio of Raemirue Photography is fine testament that you can hire a superb contractor – who becomes your sweet, smart, highly skilled friend, of all things – on Thumbtack.com! A brilliant feat of technology. Optical’s gift to 40+-year-old humankind. I’m talking about progressive lenses, of course. Their accuracy, ease of use, downright joy to wear have advanced lightning-fast over the last 15 years.

Magic, really?

What makes progressives so enchanting? As we age, we lose the ability to see up close. Yes, all of us. That’s because, with use over the years, the eye’s natural lens thickens, becoming less elastic. So as we mature, we can’t zoom in and out clearly on our own.

We could buy readers in a couple different powers, one for the computer, another for reading. One in each power for each room in the house, plus for the bag we take out and about. That solution works, as long as we don’t mind digging them out of said bag, finding where we left them in the room, and putting them on and taking them off all day.

Fortunately for us, now we can enjoy clear vision at all the distances we saw effortlessly in our youth, with just one pair of eyeglasses: progressives!

Knowledge is power

… But only if we know how to use these mighty lenses. That skill can require a little, well, focus – to learn a new way to see. Don’t stress; it’s a short learning curve. Practice will bring clarity.

First, a basic explanation of progressive lens design. With this foundation, you’ll be seeing far and wide in no time.

Progressive lens design: a very brief primer

Progressive lenses have 3 general regions:

The top 1/3 of the lenses let you see at a distance – for driving, movies and TV, walking up and down stairs, and recognizing faces at the party or across the kitchen.

The middle 1/3 brings into focus images on your computer and other objects at mid-range.

And the bottom 1/3 makes reading, seeing your smartphone and doing your needlepointing crisp (yeah, you seem like the needlepointing type ;-).

Those three regions describe the vertical variation that gives progressive lenses their name: the lenses progress from correcting your distance vision at the top, to your mid-range vision in the middle, to your near vision at the bottom.

So what does it all mean?

In short, see clearly at all distances by moving your eyes up to see far away and down to see close up.

If you move your eyes left and right without moving your head, your vision will be blurry. The best correction – the “progressive corridor,” the “sweet spot” of your lenses – extends from the top to the bottom of your frame, inside the vertical lane that is aligned directly in front of your pupils. So, keep your eyes in that lane.

Don’t move your eyes left or right. Move your head instead.

Step-by-step: using your new progressives

Now you’re ready to practice living in your new progressive lenses. Here are your instructions:

Make sure your frame fits your face well. It shouldn’t slide down your nose or sit crooked horizontally. If it doesn’t fit well, visit your friendly optician; most will gladly adjust for you.

Point your nose at an object you want to see.

Next, move your eyes up and down until you can see that object clearly. Got it? Great! Let’s do it again.

Move your nose to find another object of interest.

Now move your eyes up and down to find the spot in your lenses that lets you see clearly at the distance of your new object.

Repeat Steps #4 and 5.

Crucial tips for an easy transition

Adjusting to this new system can be frustrating, even vexing, in the beginning. Like the piano, ping pong, and crossing your eyes, the more you practice, the faster you’ll become an expert. Then you won’t have to think about these pesky steps. Like driving. Or walking. No kidding.

That said, don’t torture yourself. If you feel your eyes straining or if you start to get a headache, take your glasses off for a while. As soon as you feel better, put them back on and practice more. Be patient, be good to your eyes, and they’ll be good to you.

Safety first

Be safe on steps! They are a good distance from your head, so lower your chin to your chest and look through the tops of your lenses. On steps, feeling like you’re in the fun house is no fun!

With a little perseverance, you will adjust to your magical new progressives. I hope you love them

Can’t blame you. Frames come in a beautiful variety of styles, colors, shapes and attitudes. Having an eyewear wardrobe makes at least as much sense as having a shoe wardrobe. Or a blouse or dress wardrobe. Different looks and designs for different moods and occasions, right?

When ordering your next pair, you’ll need to provide your current eyeglasses prescription. If the latest Rx in your files is expired, yes, you really do need an exam.

Why? Two basic reasons:

Your vision. Is your prescription expired? Most printed Rxes include either an expiration date, or the date of the exam, along with a duration that Rx is valid. Typically, one year for some, two for others. Once expired, a fresh exam will reveal whether your vision has changed significantly or not since your last exam. If not, woo hoo! You can still safely wear your old specs. Of course, you can order new ones too, since that prescription will be current. If your exam shows a significant change, your old prescription is no longer helping you see adequately.

Good eyeglasses aren’t cheap (if they’re cheap, they’re not so good – for some items, you really do get what you pay for). You should see as clearly as possible with your new glasses.

Your health. Eye doctors keep their eyes on changes in your eyes from visit to visit. Your eye exam gives the doc the opportunity to clear you for another year or two of good health, or to investigate any concerns your exam might evoke, catch and treat any issues and refer you for proper care when necessary.

But I see fine with my current glasses

That may seem true, until you put on glasses with your updated prescription. Then you’ll see the clarity of vision that’s best for you. Even if you can see plenty clearly with your old Rx, if your doctor recommends updating your lenses, it’s to avoid eye strain that occurs when your eyes have to work harder than is comfortable for them. Eye strain can be subtle. You may not notice it until you take those two aspirin for the headache that develops when you wear your old glasses. Or you feel fatigued earlier than is typical. Or your concentration suffers.

Sometimes your doctor will observe a change in your prescription that is not significant enough to justify updating your lenses. They will tell you when that’s the case. And sometimes your exam will show that your prescription hasn’t changed at all. Best to know, though.

Eye exams check the health of your eyes, naturally

A few years ago, my optometrist detected a “nevus,” or freckle, on my retina (at the back of my eye). To be certain that’s all it was, he referred me to a retinal specialist, who examined my eye and evaluated the images. Since he looks at retinas in all conditions all day long every day, the optometrist and I agreed his opinion about my retinal aberration would be pretty valuable.

Upon inspection, the specialist agreed it was probably a harmless nevus that had been present, but changed little, for years and years. He recommended monitoring it to see if it changed over a couple of six-month periods. During the following year, I returned a couple times for fresh images that indicated the mark on the back of the eye was not changing, thankfully. It’s a very slowly developing, benign freckle, as suspected.

I’d rather have that information than not. If it proved of concern, I’d want to address it.

Eye exams also check your overall physical health

Doctors can diagnose quite a few medical conditions by looking at the eyes. Because the eye is the only part of the body where the blood vessels are directly visible, systemic conditions that affect their appearance might show up in an eye exam. The sooner a patient knows about conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and other diseases an examination of the eye might reveal, the sooner treatment can mitigate the condition.

Don’t you want to know if there’s a way to improve your health or preserve your quality of life? I do!

We’re so happy …

… that you’re interested in a new look for your lovely face. It’s the first thing about you that people see, and keeping your look fresh can keep you fresh. We want your new lenses to do their best work for you. So we’ll need that current prescription to give you the best results.

It penetrates and damages our unprotected skin and eyes. Short-term damage—both skin and eyes sunburn, regardless of original, natural color. Slather it, rub it in, and repeat every two hours. The closest we can get to slathering the eyes, and eyelids, is to cover them with protective materials. Whether we need a prescription to correct our vision or not, we must wear sunglasses that filter out damaging UV radiation.

Not just any frame with dark lenses delivers the required protection. It looks oh-so-cool and transforms the glasses you already own and love into sunglasses that effectively protect your eyes from the sun. Lenses come in various colors, contain 100% UV protection and are polarized for crisp vision and reduced glare.

A note about polarization

Polarized lenses reduce glare and make seeing in bright conditions comfortable. They contain a filter that blocks light coming from all except one direction. As a result, whether you’re on the road, on the water or navigating other pesky bright places, polarized lenses give you crisp outdoor vision, with vibrant color and strong contrast. They may or may not provide 100% UV protection.

The bummer about polarized lenses: their filter blocks much or all the light that displays the images on electronic devices. What to do? You can rotate your mobile device to align the filters so they let the light through. Or, more practically, get a pair of sunglasses for outdoor work, without polarization, and a polarized pair for outdoor activity when you won’t be viewing screens. Incidentally, Transitions are not polarized.

Polarized or not, make sure your lenses contain … you guessed it: 100% UV protection.

Clear lenses and UV protection

All polycarbonate and high-index lenses contain 100% UV protection, built right into the material. So even if you don’t have those materials treated for comfort in the sun—with polarization or photochromics—your eyes and skin behind the lenses will be protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

A myth debunked

Lenses, polarized or not, even if tinted very dark, but without 100% UV protection, do not protect from the sun’s harmful rays. In fact, darkly tinted lenses cause the pupils to dilate, letting in more UV radiation than a lighter tint would. Without proper protection, the eyes risk damage. If you buy sunglasses at the store, make sure they are labeled “100% UV protection,” or “UV400.”

Visions worth protecting

Following my return from NYC, my first morning run in Denver delivered this delicious sight: the season’s first blooming crocuses.
